Hamza Yusuf, the son of Pakistani immigrants, was born on April 7, 1985 in Glasgow, Scotland.
A Pakistani family is known to have immigrated to Scotland in the 1960s and Hamza Yusuf’s father worked as a factory worker in Scotland.
Yusuf became interested in politics during his university years.

He joined the Scottish National Party (SNP) in 2005 while still at the University of Glasgow. In subsequent years, Hamza Yusuf held many positions in the party.
He entered Parliament in 2011 as Glasgow MP for the Scottish National Party.

In 2012, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development. This appointment had a very important place in Scottish history. Because Hamza Yusuf was the first Muslim politician to serve as a minister in the Scottish government.
From June 2018 to May 2021, he served as Minister of Justice.

In May 2021, he continued his participation in the Cabinet as Minister of Health.
Scottish National Party chairman and Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that she had resigned both as party leader and as prime minister in the past period.

The 37-year-old politician was elected as the new leader of the Scottish National Party, receiving 52 per cent of the party’s vote in the second round of elections. With the party in power, he also became the new Prime Minister of Scotland. Thus, he went down in history as the first Muslim prime minister in the history of the country. Yusuf is expected to take office in the coming days after the parliamentary vote.
