If you’ve ever taken an art class or visited a gallery, you’ve probably come across the term “fine art”. While the term may seem to describe the quality or value of art, it is all about the purity of the artistic pursuit. Unlike crafts or decorative work, fine art is a process created solely for aesthetic and intellectual purposes.
When examples of fine art are mentioned, iconic sculptures such as the “Girl with a Pearl Earring” or Michelangelo’s “David” usually come to mind. However, this definition actually covers several different disciplines. We can list these disciplines as painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, architecture and art photography. And over time, new disciplines are added, the list continues to evolve and grow. We have collected for you different types of fine art. Let’s look at the details together.
What is fine art?
Visual arts refers to arts that primarily serve aesthetic or intellectual purposes, as well as traditional ones. This expression is usually applied to such visual arts as painting and sculpture. However, it is also preferable to describe other creative disciplines such as music, architecture, poetry, and performing arts. The use of the word “beautiful” in this case expresses the integrity of the artistic search. The definition of fine art specifically excludes art that serves a functional purpose, including crafts and applied arts.
What are the types of fine arts?

1. Drawing
The drawing, which belongs to the disciplines of fine arts, points to a history dating back to the Paleolithic times. It is considered one of the oldest forms of human communication and creativity. Pencil, charcoal, etc. means the creation of characters on two-dimensional surfaces such as paper or cardboard with a tool and similar application forms. Drawing is one of the integral elements of art and serves various purposes of artists. While it may be an art form in its own right, artists also prefer this discipline for exploring ideas and concepts and preparing for their final work in a different medium.
2. Table
Paintings and paintings are perhaps the most popular type of fine art that can be viewed for a long time in museums around the world. It is defined as the application of paint or pigment to a hard surface, usually with tools such as a brush or palette. Like drawing, painting has millennial roots. This feature reflects another centuries-old form of human expression in paintings.
The evolution from cave decorations to canvas paintings can be explained by improvements in painting materials. Painting in Western art has given rise to many art movements using this medium to explore different aesthetics and ideas inspired by the historical context. What’s more, the most beautiful and popular artworks, including Mona Lisa and Starry Night, come under the painting and painting category.
3. Print image
Printing, one of the various artistic disciplines, is an application that transfers ink from a matrix to a material (usually paper) and makes multiple prints of the same image. Matrices can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, metal plates, linoleum, aluminum, or fabric. Although there are different printing techniques (each with its own unique qualities), the end result can be expressed as the ability to make multiple prints on the same image.
In modern times, works are published in printed format. Although artists sometimes release open prints, each print will be released in a limited edition. When the impression is ready, the matrix is destroyed and each prepared impression is considered an original work of art. Traditionally, once printing began, reproductions were often used to illustrate books or sold in small collections.
4. Sculpture
Sculpture, another artistic discipline, can be defined as a three-dimensional work of art created by adding or subtracting material. In this discipline, artists often create a form or combine different forms in stone, marble, wood, clay, metal, and ceramic, among other materials. The practice of sculpture has existed for centuries and continues to this day.
In fact, one of the earliest known works of art called the Venus of Willendorf is a miniature figurine carved out of limestone between 30,000 and 25,000 BC. But Western sculpture as we know it now originated in ancient Greece, when artists captured the human figure with anatomical realism. Since then, various art movements have developed under the name of sculpture, encompassing a range of styles and approaches.
5. The art of installation
In other words, installation art is a contemporary movement characterized by an immersive dimension, incredible works of art. Often, installation artists design these works for specific locations, skillfully turning any space into a custom interactive environment. Installation or installation, in contrast to traditional works of art, is an artistic discipline that does not contain a medium-independent art object, but is created for a specific space, using and exploring the qualities of space, and arguing that public participation is a basic requirement. The creation process can be carried out indoors or outdoors.
6. Art photography
Fine art photography, one of the enjoyable forms of art, turns out to be the opposite of what most of us think about when we think about how we use a camera. Most amateur photographers press the shutter of their camera to document important events and capture memories without artistic motivation. Instead, the hallmark of artistic photography is that it is not the primary purpose of recording an object. These artists only use photography as a tool to express their vision and make an artistic statement. Thus, artistic photography becomes a separate artistic discipline.
