The mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Ekrem Imamoglu, stood trial for insulting members of the High Electoral Commission (YSK) in 2019. The fourth hearing in the case, which has been on Turkey’s agenda for a long time, is taking place today at the Anadolu Courthouse in Kartal, Istanbul. However, the case is expected to be decided at today’s hearing. Well, what happened in the process, which was closely followed by the whole of Turkey, what could happen next? Let’s look at the details together…
Ekrem Imamoglu, Mayor of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, delivered a speech at the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities held in Strasbourg, France on October 30, 2019. In his speech, Imamoglu said that during the election period, state resources were used indefinitely in favor of the ruling party, and that the president and cabinet ministers took action that ignored the election bans.
A few days after this speech, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu referred to Imamoglu: “I go to the European Parliament and tell the idiot who complained about Turkey. These people will make you pay for it. This job isn’t all that free.” used words. Imamoglu reacted to Soylu’s words. “Those who canceled the elections on March 31, and when we look at what is happening in the world, in Europe, at the point where we are, in their eyes, those who canceled the elections on March 31 are idiots, let’s focus first on them. “. He answered… What then happened?
YSK opened a criminal case after Imamoglu’s statements
Later, the Anatolia Prosecutor General’s Office in Istanbul launched an investigation. Thus, a lawsuit began demanding a prison sentence and a political ban on Ekrem Imamoglu.
The indictment alleges that Imamoglu publicly insulted YSK members.

In addition, it is alleged that Imamoglu’s statements are of a nature that “insults the honor, honor and dignity of the members of the board.” On the other hand, Ekrem Imamoglu, in his written defense of the indictment, stated that he did not make any statements about YSK members and that this discourse was not taken against the board members by anyone.
However, it was requested that Imamoglu be sentenced to 1 year, 3 months, 15 days, 4 years and 1 month in prison for the crime of “publicly insulting public officials working in chains against public officials” against Sadi Güven and 10 YSK members in that time. In addition, Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), which contains a “political ban,” must be applied to Imamoglu.
The fourth hearing in the case is taking place today at the Anadolu Courthouse in Kartal, Istanbul.

Before the trial, the security forces are said to have taken extensive security measures around the courthouse. However, it is noted that many deputies followed today’s meeting of the corps. It is also reported that some of the journalists who wanted to follow the case were not allowed into the hall.
Ekrem Imamoglu’s lawyers have said at previous hearings that they are waiting for an acquittal.

Ekrem Imamoglu, on the other hand, called the case illegal and said:In my cell, I do not feel a single worry, fear, anxiety about this, but I am ashamed of this trial. There can be no such judgment. Like a joke. This is a tragicomic situation.” He used.
It is alleged that the case, which began with the demand for the political removal and imprisonment of Ekrem Imamoglu, can be decided at today’s meeting.

So what could happen next? Experts state that there are different options for the outcome of the case. On the other hand, even if the case is decided in favor or against Ekrem Imamoglu, the processes of the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court must be completed for the decision to become final.
Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu was asked what he would do if a political ban was decided against him.Tomorrow (Today) is such a bad decision, I don’t feel that way and don’t want to feel it. I do not want this on behalf of our people or on behalf of the judiciary of the Republic of Turkey. Ekrem Imamoglu is the latest to suffer from this.” answered.
Ekrem Imamoglu posted on his social media account ahead of today’s hearing on a lawsuit filed against him with a political ban and jail time.
