Promising and talented young football players are among the brightest actors in football. Accordingly, the International Center for Sports Research (CIES) recently published the results of a remarkable study. The center has listed the clubs that have spent the most time with under-20 players globally over the past 5 football seasons. The study, between April 1, 2018 and March 2023, determined how many chances a total of 1,168 football clubs around the world gave footballers under 20 years of age and how much time young footballers took to their teams. According to this, the Danish representative of Nordsjaelland is the football club that devotes the most time to young talents. The Turkish team that devotes the most time to young football players is Altınordu FK, one of the TFF 2nd League teams. Let’s look at the details together.
The International Center for Sports Research (CIES) has compiled a list of the teams that have given the most chances to players under the age of 20 over the past 5 seasons.
The study examined matches played by 1,168 football clubs around the world between April 1, 2018 and March 2023 in local leagues.
According to the study, the Danish representative of Nordsälland is the most courageous team when it comes to young players.
Nordsjælland included 41 players under the age of 20 in 168 matches on relevant dates, representing 37 per cent of the total match duration, and became the football club that gave the most chances to young players over the past 5 years.
In second place on the list is the Slovak team Žilina, which produced 34 young players in 159 matches. In 20 percent of these matches, young footballers playing in the Žilina team remained on the field.
Altınordu FK, which nominated players aged 20 and under in 14.1% of 171 matches, ranked 15th on the list.
The representative of the 2nd league TFF, known for its significant investments in infrastructure, managed to become the only Turkish team to enter the top 20 of the list.
Besiktas is the Super League team where young players spend the most time.
Between those dates, the black-and-white team entered the field 178 times, and 11 players under the age of 20 had a chance to play in 3.5 percent of these matches. Trabzonspor became the 4th Super League team to give the most chances to young players after Antalyaspor and Kayserispor, giving 9 young players a chance to play in 2.4% of the time.
Fenerbahçe have appointed 13 different players under the age of 20 in 178 matches.
Young Fenerbahce players stayed on the pitch in 1.6 percent of those matches. On the other hand, Galatasaray gave opportunities to 11 different young players in 1.3% of matches during the same period.
Many young players playing in the Superleague teams have been on the field for a very limited time over the past 5 seasons.
For example, the young players of Adana Demirspor managed to stay on the field only in 0.9% of matches where the representative of Adana entered the field. This figure was 0.7 percent in Yumraniyespor, Kasimpas, Basaksehir and Alanyaspor. Ankaragucu, Gaziantep FC, Sivasspor and Konyaspor brought their young players to the field in only 0.1 percent of the competition.
Renowned German football club Borussia Dortmund is the team that provides the most opportunities for youngsters in Europe’s top 5 leagues.
A Bundesliga representative has played with 15 different youngsters in 12.5% of 167 league games. As such, it has become the football club that has given young players the most chances to play in the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 over the past 5 years.
Brazil’s 2nd Division Sampaio, Argentina’s 2nd Division Agropecuario, Portugal’s Chávez and Rio Ave have not nominated players aged 20 or under in any of their matches between the respective dates.
