Cell phones are one of the most used technological tools in our daily lives. For this reason, new updates often come to phones. 5G technology is really nothing new. US wireless carrier Verizon Wireless first launched this feature in 2019. As time passes, 5G is finally coming to our country, albeit through iPhones. So what is 5G? Can we benefit from this when it comes to Turkey? Let’s look at the details together.

What is 5G?

G (GENERATION) in units such as 2G, 3G, 4G, 4.5G represents internet speed. In Turkish it is also called “carried”. In short, 5G means that the Internet infrastructure has changed and evolved 5 times. Users with 5G technology have much faster internet access and the latency is just as low. This technology, first released by the American operator Verizon Wireless in 2019, is only entering our country.

Is it very different from 4G?

5G

5G networks can reach speeds from 10 Gbps to 20 Gbps. 4G connection speeds are 100 Mbps on mobile phones and 1 Gbps on Wi-Fi networks. Only from here you can see the difference in speed between them. In addition, 5G minimizes ping, i.e. reduces network latency. 5G provides 60 to 120 times lower latency than 4G.

Is there 5G support in Turkey?

Official reports show that operators in Turkey do not currently offer 5G support. Some sources show that some cities in our country have 5G infrastructure, but citizens cannot use it. Well-known operators of our country such as Turkcell, Türk Telekom and Vodafone have not officially published their 5G coverage maps at present. However, a site called Nperf, which shows the performance of internet connections, has created a 5G map of our country using its own data.

A map with cities such as Ankara, Izmir, Sakarya, Antalya, Muğla, Gaziantep, Kayseri and Trabzon could be a sign that 5G is being tested in these cities and will be opened in the future. However, since the GSM operators in Turkey have not yet activated 5G, you cannot use 5G even if you live in these cities.

Where can you use 5G in Turkey?

This function can only be actively used at Istanbul Airport in our country. If your phone supports this feature, just text 5G to 2200 for Turkcell, 5555 for Türk Telekom and 5G to 7000 for Vodafone to use 5G at the airport.

Will we be able to use the 5G that came with the iOS update?

With the iOS 16.4 update, 5G will be available to iPhone users in our country. However, it is not possible to use this infrastructure in Turkey until it is opened. The iPhone models that support this feature are: iPhone 12 series, iPhone 13, and all iPhone 14 series.
